Create a list of items that students need to find in their homes. Create an extensive list for them to find i.e. a book, paper click, no.2 pencil, laundry basket. You can give them this list ahead of time and they can bring them to a virtual meeting, or you can give them 5 mins to look for as many items as they can. When they come back with their items, read a bible verse i.e. Moses splitting the red sea. Tell the students to recreate the bible scene with the items they found around their house. This can be a skit, a diagram, etc. Let students be creative, take note to each student’s representation of the story and ask them why they portrayed it in such a way.
Read a passage with students then give them 5 mins to draw out the bible passage, after they have completed their drawings, give them 5 mins to explain what their drawings. As in Scavenger Bible, pay attention to how each student/s portrayed the passage and what they decided to emphasize. These can help with discussion and understanding your students.
Prayer walks in the Wilderness
Tell your students to go on prayer walks, while having virtual meetings create a prayer list and send those prayers out via text, Instagram, Facebook, etc. Instruct students to walk outside and go through the prayer list. Prayer for community while in isolation will build empathy and community.
Write Letter/Pen Pals
Our youth leaders are going to write letters to students every 7-10 days with encouragement, prayer, and love. Each youth or young adult group and make this activity their own, by doing pen pals organized by leaders, have students’ leaders write them to other students. It is also a great opportunity to prompt students to think about God in their current surroundings. Ask them to write a new thing they learned about themselves and about God. What are they worried about? What are they excited about? These questions will help reflection and create community while in distance.
Netflix has added a feature which allows groups of people to watch movies together while remote. Such a feature can help organized a discussion over a specific movie or show, or just an opportunity for connection and fun.
